Folk Song Collector

Interestingly, the book uses two narrative voices. The book starts with a folk song collector. One day, after work, he takes a nap on the grass under the shade of the tree. That is when he sees an old man with an ox. He is curious that why this old man has given the ox so many names, and decides to go up and talk to him. This is how we, the readers, meet Fugui, the protagonist in the book. Ultimately, the collector is a connection between the audience and the protagonist. We are also the ones sitting with Fugui, listening to his story. It becomes imagery when he depicts the conversations and actions, not only of Fugui, but also of the old ox. In other words, the collector is acting as a camera, which captures everything for us.
